By Matt Owen, Guitar World || Wayne Charvel, the visionary guitar maker whose namesake brand changed the guitar industry, has died at the age of 85. The news was announced in a statement posted to Dignity Memorial, which confirmed he passed away earlier this month on July 12.
Charvel leaves behind a legacy as one of the guitar world’s most influential change-makers.
“Beyond his remarkable craftsmanship, he was a devoted father, grandfather, family member, and friend,” the post on Dignity Memorial notes. “He will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, wisdom, and his great sense of humor.
“His greatest legacy is not only the beautiful guitars he built, but also the love, values, and inspiration he shared with everyone around him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him. His impact in the music world, and his loving spirit will live on for generations.”
Few luthiers have had the same impact on the guitar scene as Charvel. When he opened Charvel’s Guitar Repair in 1974 in Azusa, California, he unwittingly sparked a guitar custom shop revolution.
