By Starletta Watson, News Nation, WNCN | The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating what led to a crash early Saturday morning in Harnett County. An alert from the North Carolina Department of Transportation notified drivers around 2:20 a.m. of a crash on Interstate 95 north near mile marker 70 near Pope Road.

Troopers at the scene told CBS 17 that a white minivan struck the back of a heavy-duty truck carrying fuel. Troopers said this resulted in one person dying from their injuries.

The Catalinas on Fb, 4/11/26: We are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend, Doug Winstead.
Our prayers are with Deanna Winstead, The Band Of Oz, and the entire beach music community, and all the lives that he touched for many years.

Gone way too soon.

Love you Doug! RIP dear friend

Frankie Burney, 4/11/26: It shouldn’t take a tragedy like what happened early this morning to say this, but I feel like I need to say it. I have not traveled nearly the miles Doug Winstead or some of our other legends have traveled at 1, 2, 3, 4am getting home from band gigs, but I have traveled my share. Closing one eye so I could only see one lane, stopping and walking laps around the vehicle, wiping my hands in the grass to get dew to wipe my face, watching very closely for that possible drunk driver. These are just a few of the hazards we face traveling home from gigs. To ALL my musician friends, whether it’s Beach Music, Country, R&R, Pop, R&B, please be overly cautious on those trips home after late night gigs. Losing one is one too many. I was a big fan and friend of Doug and this news made it very hard to get up and motivated this morning. Losing a band member is also extremely hard. We had to play a gig one week after losing our bass player, Neill, I can’t imagine how tough it’s going to be on BOZ fulfilling their obligation to play a show tonight, less than 24 hours after this tragedy. We will be continuously Praying for Doug’s family, his wife Deanna, and the Band Of Oz. And to all my friends, again please be careful out there.

Will Baker, 4/13/26: I have been struck by all the post from people all over the east coast who knew and loved my Cousin Doug Winstead, He touched so many people with his music, talent, and awesome personality. He personified what its like to be a working musician and entertainer. people dont understand the stress and work that goes into putting on a great show, and especially the dangers of the late night drives home. Doug’s brother David was also killed in a car accident about 15 yrs ago, my heart goes out to Jill, how horrible to lose both your sons this way. As kids we spent a lot of time staying with them in Rocky Mount, they always made us feel welcome and I will always have fond memories of those days and the affect they made on me and my life. I was influenced to play music by Doug, I never got to share a stage with Doug, but we always kept in touch and I tried to catch his show when playing in our area, because I also play a lot it was rare to be able to catch his shows, and I would always say next time…. now there won’t be a next time and that stings. As Doug would say, the show must go on, or my favorite ‘It’s time to make the donuts!” Rest in peace, Doug. God has one hell of an entertainer in heaven now, and may God be with his family.
