Lil Poppa, the prolific Georgia rapper who scored hits with songs like “Love & War” and “Purple Hearts,” died on Wednesday (Feb. 18th) at the age of 25.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the news to Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday. Senior Medical Examiner Investigator Brian Jost Reents noted to EW that “the manner and cause” of the rapper’s death “are pending investigation.”

TMZ was the first to report the death of the Jacksonville-based musician, whose real name was Janarious Mykel Wheeler.

In a single decade, Lil Poppa produced a body of music sizable enough to rival his peers with 10, 20, even 30 more years to their names.

Lil Poppa memorial service ends in gunfire, leaving four people hospitalized

Lil Poppa’s weekend memorial service was interrupted by gunfire, leaving four people shot and hospitalized.

On Saturday evening (February 21), people gathered at the intersection of A. Philip Randolph Boulevard and Jessie Street on the East Side of Jacksonville, Florida, to remember the life of the 25-year-old local rapper, who took his own life last Wednesday (February 18) in Georgia.

According to Action News Jax, the celebration ended just after midnight when a gunman opened fire. Police have said between 12-15 shots were fired. The four victims included two women, ages 34 and 39, and two men, aged 37 and 43. The 34-year-old woman was discovered on the scene and taken to a nearby hospital. The other three victims transported themselves to a hospital.

Lil Poppa (real name Janarious Mykel Wheeler) was signed to CMG in 2022, joining the Yo Gotti-founded label that includes artists GloRilla, MoneyBagg Yo, 42 Dugg, EST Gee, and more.

On Thursday (February 19), it was reported that Poppa died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The rapper, who had just released the video for his latest track, “Out of Town Bae,” reportedly shot himself in the head, and his death has been ruled a suicide by the Fulton County Medical Examiner.

Lil Poppa Reportedly Crashed His Car Prior to Death From Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

More details have emerged in the death of Lil Poppa, who died by suicide on Wednesday (Feb. 18) in Georgia.

Hapeville Chief of Police Bruce Hedley told TMZ that the 25-year-old was involved in a single-car accident on the highway near Hapeville, Georgia. Following the accident, he called his manager and asked what he should do next; at that point, Poppa’s car still worked.

His manager told him to meet him at a nearby Hilton Hotel parking lot. According to Hedley, the Jacksonville, Florida rapper remained in the car and spoke to his manager through his window.
