Photo: Kate Ormsbee | By Jack Dunn, Variety | Brad Arnold, the lead singer and founding member of the American rock band 3 Doors Down, died on Saturday after a battle with cancer. He was 47. A rep for Arnold said he died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his wife and family.
Arnold, the original drummer and vocalist of 3 Doors Down, helped form the band in 1996 in Escatawpa, Miss. He was responsible for writing and producing the 2000 hit “Kryptonite,” one of the group’s most enduring tracks. Arnold famously wrote the lyrics for the song when he was just 15 years old.
In May of 2025, Arnold revealed in a social media video that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney cancer.
“Hey everybody, it’s Brad from 3 Doors Down. I hope you’re having a great day today,” he said in the video. “Got some not so good news for you today. So, I’d been sick a couple of weeks ago and then went to the hospital and got checked out, and actually got the diagnosis that I had a clear cell renal cell carcinoma that had metastasized into my lung. And it’s stage four, and that’s not real good.”

OTHER NOTABLE MUSICIANS’ DEATHS
Well-known Local Music Supporter Kate Ormsbee Passes
Jayne Hart: It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Sister, Cathy (Kate) Lynn Ormsbee on January 28th, 2026, in her home in Lakewood, CO.
Kate had an adventurous spirit, known for her infectious love of dancing, passion for traveling, concerts at Red Rocks, loyalty to the KC Chiefs, proud Army Veteran and her desire to soak up a beautiful moon or take her new best friend, Rockit, for walks in the parks and mountains. Kate loved Samantha Fish and saw her any chance that she could.
Kate’s strength and determination will continue to inspire all of us and our Sisterly bond is a priceless treasure. “Side by side or miles apart, Sisters will always be connected by heart.” Kate will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Our family also wishes to express sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses and friends for the exceptional care, kindness and compassion shown to Kate during her illness.
Rest in peace Kate and we hope you are dancing in Heaven, free and joyous, surrounded by eternal light and love.
A Celebration of Kate’s life will take place at a later date. Please share any pictures and memories of Kate as you wish.
From Dr. Annette Cannon: RIP Kate. You were a wonderful person with a beautiful soul, and loved by so many. I’m grateful for the time I got to be a part of your life. I’m thankful for all the long talks we had. Prayers to your family and all who loved you. You will be missed. ❤
