By Fisher Jack, EURweb | The music world is mourning the loss of Tito Jackson, a beloved member of the legendary group The Jackson 5, who died today at the age of 70. According to Steve Manning, a longtime family friend and former manager of the Jacksons, Tito succumbed to a heart attack while driving from New Mexico to Oklahoma.
While an official cause of death has yet to be confirmed, Manning’s statement was first reported by Entertainment Tonight (ET) via X, bringing an abrupt end to Tito’s vibrant life and illustrious career.
Born Toriano Adaryll Jackson on October 15, 1953, in Gary, Indiana, Tito was the third eldest of the Jackson siblings. Growing up in a large family with seven siblings, Tito developed a strong bond with his brothers, which later became the foundation of their harmonious performances. Under the keen eye of their father, Joseph Walter “Joe” Jackson, the family household was a hub of musical activity, with daily practice sessions that honed the talents of young Tito alongside Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael.
Rise to Stardom with The Jackson 5
In the late 1960s, Tito and his brothers formed The Jackson 5, quickly rising to fame with their dynamic performances and tight harmonies. Tito served as the lead guitarist and provided backing vocals, contributing significantly to the group’s distinctive sound. Hits like “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” and “I’ll Be There” catapulted The Jackson 5 to international stardom, making them one of the most popular acts of the 1970s. Their appeal transcended borders, establishing The Jackson 5 as global superstars.
Evolution into The Jacksons and Musical Innovation
In 1975, seeking greater creative freedom, The Jackson 5 transitioned to The Jacksons after leaving Motown Records and signing with CBS Records. This move allowed the group to experiment with new musical styles, incorporating elements of funk, soul, and rock into their repertoire. Tito’s exceptional guitar work remained a cornerstone of their evolving sound, showcasing his versatility and ensuring the group’s relevance in the ever-changing music industry. Albums such as “Destiny” and “Triumph” highlight Tito’s crucial role in The Jacksons’ continued success.
A Multifaceted Career and Personal Endeavors
Beyond his contributions to The Jackson 5 and The Jacksons, Tito Jackson pursued a solo career and engaged in various personal projects. As a solo artist, he released albums that reflected his individual musical style and creativity, collaborating with a diverse range of artists and exploring different genres. Tito also ventured into acting and reality television, appearing in various TV shows and movies alongside his brothers, further extending his influence beyond the music scene.
