By Matthias Binder, Las Vegas News | Not every show ends with an encore and a standing ovation. Sometimes the house lights come up early, security starts clearing rows, and thousands of people head for the parking lot before the final song ever gets played.
These are the nights that fans still talk about decades later, not for the music, but for the exodus.
•Guns N’ Roses in St. Louis, 1991: the Riverport Riot
Fifteen songs into their set at Riverport Amphitheatre, Axl Rose spotted a fan filming him from the crowd and demanded security intervene. Axl Rose spotted someone taking pictures from the audience and instructed security to put a stop to it, yelling “Get that guy!” before leaping into the audience himself. When he climbed back on stage, he was done. Rose yelled, “thanks to the lame-ass security, I’m going home,” dropped the mic and walked offstage. The band followed him out mid-song, and the crowd did not take it well. A riot ensued, injuring dozens of fans, and GN’R was banned from playing St. Louis while Rose was charged with four counts of misdemeanor assault. Damage to the venue ran into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the band did not return to the city for over two decades.
