Join us for the inaugural Tucson Songwriting Camp February 9 -12, 2017! The Camp will be held just north of Tucson, on the grounds of Biosphere 2. Our instructors will be Sally Barris, Cliff Eberhardt, and Cosy Sheridan. Please feel free to explore this website. Registration is now open. If you have any questions, contact Melissa at melissatatumarizona AT gmail DOT com.
Registration starts at 3:00 pm on Thursday, February 9, 2017, with orientation from 4:30-5:00pm. Camp will end at 5:00pm on Sunday, February 12, although camp is structured so that if your travel plans require you to leave early, you can leave as early as 12:30 on Sunday without missing any events.
The camp includes
● workshops
● song circles
● one-on-one critiques
● “home rooms:” in which students have time to work on songs
The Tucson Songwriting Camp aims to let each student structure a schedule that balances classes and time for reflection and inspiration in a way that suits their app roach to songwriting. We are thus offering a schedule in which each instructor offers each workshop twice, allowing every student who wants to take the class to do so and ensuring that each class has no more than 15 students, allowing for individualized attention. Each instructor will also be supervising a “home room” period in which they will touch base with students as the students work individually or in groups on songs. In addition to the classes/workshops, each student will receive a 30 minute one-on-one critique from one of the instructors, and will have the opportunity to participate in a song circle with each of the instructors. The critique and song circle slots will be allocated once each student’s schedule is established.
We realize this approach can seem a little overwhelming and complicated, so we created what we are dubbing the “rainbow selection” process. Your rainbow can have as few or as many colors as you want, but it can have only one instance of the same color. As part of the registration process, you will be asked your preferences as to schedule, as well as you arrival/departure needs, and we will do our best to ensure everyone gets as close as possible to their preferred schedule.
Accommodations
While not required, students are strongly advised to stay in the on-site accommodations. The nearest hotels are approximately 20 minutes away, and due to strict light pollution laws in Tucson (most of the surrounding mountain ranges have observatories), it is very dark at night to drive on unfamiliar mountain roads.
Biosphere 2 contains a complex of casitas (think apartments) for visiting scientists, and each casita has between three and five bedrooms. Many rooms have their own bathroom, although sometimes two bedrooms share a bathroom. Each room is designed for double occupancy, although a limited number of single rooms are available for an extra fee.
Each casita features a full kitchen and a common living area. Pictures are below, and additional pictures are on the Biosphere 2 website. Biosphere 2 has a cafe that is open for lunch each day, and we will arrange a grocery store run for students without cars. Students will be responsible for their own meals.
