Elvis Presley Fans on Nashville on Facebook: Please keep Richard Sterban in your thoughts and prayers as he faces a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Before becoming a celebrated member of The Oak Ridge Boys in 1972, Sterban performed alongside Elvis Presley as part of J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet—a collaboration immortalized in the documentary Elvis On Tour.
Known for speaking with warmth and respect about his time with Elvis, Sterban went on to carve out an enduring legacy of his own. His signature deep bass line — “oom-pa-pa-oom-pa-pa-moww-moww” — in the Oak Ridge Boys’ 1981 classic Elvira, and his commanding lead vocal on their cover of the Righteous Brothers’ Dream On, remain iconic contributions to American music history.
