We received the following e-mail from IAMA claiming to have “discovered” Meghan Trainor when she allegedly won one of their songwriting competitions. However, we find it interesting that Meghan attended the Durango Songwriters Expo in early 2009. “Big” Al Anderson, guitarist for NRBQ, who was attending the same year, introduced Meghan to Carla Wallace of Big Yellow Dog Music, who signed Meghan to a publishing deal and was able to work with her to get her signed to Epic Records. Meghan even acknowledged that she felt that the DSE put her on the right road to stardom (see above article on Epic Records presenting Jim Attebery, co-founder of the DSE, with a double-platinum record award for his assistance in bringing Meghan to the attention of those who could help her out).

Early beginnings
At age 17, Trainor attended the Durango Songwriter’s Expo and Big Al Anderson of NRBQ introduced her to Carla Wallace of Big Yellow Dog Music. Trainor signed as a songwriter with Big Yellow Dog Music shortly after her 18th birthday, while she was still in high school. In 2011, Trainor wrote and self-released two albums, I’ll Sing With You and Only 17. She went on several writing trips to Los Angeles, New York City, and Nashville. She settled in Nashville full-time when she was 19. She has had songwriting cuts with Rascal Flatts, Sabrina Carpenter, R5, and many others.
2014–present:
On one of Trainor’s writing trips, she met and wrote with Grammy-nominated producer Kevin Kadish. They wrote “All About That Bass” in 2014, and Trainor’s publishing company told her that many artists might be interested in recording the song. L.A. Reid heard Trainor’s own demo of the song and signed her to Epic Records, where she was able to release the song as a solo artist. “All About That Bass” has since become her first #1 single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, and has topped charts in various other countries including Australia, Canada, Denmark and New Zealand. Trainor’s EP, Title, was released in September 2014.
On 28 September 2014, the UK’s Official Charts Company confirmed that Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass” made chart history in the UK by becoming the first act to enter the Official Singles Chart Top 40 based on streams alone.
[Please note that nowhere in the IAMA letter does it say that the song that Meghan allegedly wrote and that won their contest was “All About That Bass” but the average reader/singer/songwriter might gather that from the way the note is written. It does not give the title of the song that won, and it mentions that Meghan’s song won “4 years ago” – in 2010 — 4 years before it was written!]

Hi ,
IAMA (International Acoustic Music Awards) winner stunned the Music World… They laughed when she entered and won: many entrants and music industry pros were skeptical when she won. But, when she hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts for the past 5 weeks, heard her Multi- Platinum selling song on the radio, they were left completely stunned and speechless. The entrants of IAMA were surprised and even angry when a 16 year old girl won 4 years ago, completely unaware of the incredible success she was going to achieve. Her music video has garnered over 123 million views.
Her story and success will inspire you. This reminds you that anything is possible. Entrants have contacted us to say that her voice and song is just above average and they can do better than her. If you think you have a better voice and song than her, you too can hit #1!
Meghan Trainor was discovered by IAMA (International Acoustic Music Awards) and she won Best Female Artist in the 6th Annual IAMA (International Accoustic Music Awards) in 2010 when she was just 16 years old with her songs performed in acoustic format. We are so proud of her success because she was a complete unknown when we discovered her and now she has reached international stardom. Read her incredible success story >>
