Photo: Pussy Riot | [Press release] On July 4th, Pussy Riot staged the performance of RAGE at Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie. Directed by Nadya Tolokonnikova, 60 Pussy Riot members participated in the performance, involving a large-scale installation, smoke sculpture and their signature balaclavas. Berlin police estimated over 2500 people in attendance even through the Berlin rain and witnessed a rainbow appearing during the performance. A rainbow is an extremist symbol in Russia according to the latest law labeling LGBTQ+ symbols as extremist. Pussy Riot Siberia is the name of the music core of this performance, including Nadya Tolokonnikova, Max Lawton, Riley Bray and John Caldwell.

“This performance is dedicated to all who lost their freedom and life fighting with the dictatorship. Love is stronger than death.” Nadya Tolokonnikova states.

Klaus Biesenbach, director of the Neue Nationalgalerie stated about the performance – “A loud and peaceful act of solidarity to all political prisoners who lost their freedom for speaking out, like Nadya herself when she performed in Moscow, at age 22, in 2012 when she was sentenced to nearly 2 years of prison.”

Earlier this month, Nadya Tolokonnikova’s RAGE exhibition at Austria’s museum OK Linz opened and is on view through October, 20th 2024. You can see the RAGE total installation here, including images of the live Pussy Riot Siberia performance at the museum exhibit’s opening night.
