If you’ve been sitting with HOPE – curious but not quite sure it’s for you – you’re not alone. I’ve heard from so many of you this week with the same questions. So today I’m going to answer them. But to really understand HOPE, it helps to know where it came from.
After October 7th, I stopped playing concerts.
I completely froze.
What could I possibly offer that would meet the moment at hand? How could these songs that I wrote before that day still be relevant?
And then my friend who had a son fighting in Gaza asked me when my next concert was going to be.
“I need music,” she told me.
You bet your a$$ I got right on that.
I organized a concert in my living room. The following week, we had a full house.
Truthfully, I was really scared. Would I sing the right songs? Would I have the right message?
That night turned out to be exactly what we all needed. We sang together. We prayed through our voices and through our tears. We were together in our anger, our sadness, our questioning, our fear, our sense of hopelessness. And the music made it all possible.
We all needed to feel a glimmer of hope again.
After decades of doing this, that night I began to see what I truly offer my people: hope.
And not only in times of crisis.
When you come to a show of mine, my wish is that you leave feeling hopeful. I want you to know that you’re not alone, that you’re normal (or as normal as the rest of us!) That’s why I sing the thoughts that most of us are too afraid to say out loud. I want you to tap into the hope that comes from remembering that we’re all a part of something bigger. I want to help you connect to the deepest parts of yourself so you can feel the hope that is nestled in there beside your goodness and your strength.
But a concert is just one night.
Once I could see clearly what I offer, my next move became obvious: to help my people carry that hope with them throughout their day-to-day lives.
