Photo: CMHOF Award | Story by Tess Creasy, Colorado Music Hall of Fame | Jazz Aspen Snowmass (JAS) and founder Jim Horowitz were inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame over Labor Day weekend! Set in Snowmass Town Park against stunning views of the Elk Mountain Range, the festival featured internationally-recognized artists Lenny Kravitz, Imagine Dragons, Luke Combs and Marcus King. Emerging Colorado artist, Lady Denim, Colorado State University alumni, also had a spotlight on the iconic stage.
“Today, JAS is in the strongest position of its entire 35 years,” says Horowitz, “and on the cusp of another beautiful evolution and transformation.”
Jim Horowitz — whose career began as a jazz pianist and music agent — birthed JAS in 1991 as a single event. Since then, it has grown to be an irreplaceable facet of the Colorado Music Community with two annual festivals (The Labor Day Experience and The June Experience) and a sharp focus on giving back. During the Sunday induction, he was joined onstage by Hall board co-chair Scott Tobias, vice chair RD Sewald, executive director Karen Radman and board member Rob Blume.
Colorado hosts a variety of phenomenal festivals, and yet this is the first to ever be inducted into The Hall. Executive Director Karen Radman explains that what sets JAS apart is its community-driven values. The organization has shown unwavering commitment to education, using festival revenue to put millions toward music education programs for Colorado youth.
“Music fans get to experience the joys of live music and kids across the Western Slope get to learn about the joys of music,” Radman says for Aspen Daily News. “JAS’ continual evolution is also something to note; we cannot wait for the opening of the Paul JAS Center this winter,” she says.
