By Mark Gray, People | For 35 years, it’s been one of the most difficult tickets to get: access to Sammy Hagar’s legendary birthday bash in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Fans of the Red Rocker have longed to attend the series of parties, but it’s far from easy. Tickets are assigned via a random lottery process, and then the lucky winners have transport themselves to the resort city on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Other Redheads, the name of his fan base, wait in line for days in advance to buy remaining tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. The Cabo Wabo Cantina, where the party takes place, has a capacity of only 600, a far cry from the arenas Hagar has typically performed in throughout his career. Team Hagar claims they get about 70,000 ticket requests for the bash each year.
Naturally, when I got an invite to attend this year’s party, I jumped at the chance. I’ve seen the Van Halen singer perform several times over the years, mostly at his residency shows in Las Vegas, but watching him rattle off a two-hour concert in front of his most diehard fans, many of whom make annual pilgrimages to the bash, was something special. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Hagar happier on stage than he was while celebrating his 78th birthday.
The event took over Cabo, and not even a tropical storm could stop it.
After checking into the Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa, my eyes immediately focused on a group of fans from Texas donning Hagar gear. Later, an Uber driver casually mentioned “the birthday” during a ride, not knowing I was headed there that evening. Then, of course, there is the mass of Redheads who staked out prime spots to watch the concert. The event had seemingly permeated the entire town.
From my hotel, I walked to the venue, attempting not to float away, as the last rain bands of Tropical Storm Raymond pounded Cabo, causing major flooding in the roadways leading to Cabo Wabo.
