[Several years ago I got a call from an “IRS agent” who said I owed thousands of dollars in unpaid back taxes. I panicked, to say the least! And then he asked me to provide my Social Security number as a way to verify who I was. That set off RED FLAGS galore! I replied, “You already have my SSN,” and hung up. He never called back. Be prepared. Or, better yet, just hang up, and call the “organization” yourself directly to verify if you owe money if you think there is a small chance of an ice cube in Hell that you do! Chances are pretty good that you don’t – as I knew I didn’t as I always paid in extra for my taxes – both Federal and State – and have gotten a refund for years.]
