Here is a follow-up. | By Julianna O’Clair, Westword |A resolution currently being drafted in the Colorado State Senate will create a commemorative Colorado Musician Day, highlighting the creators and artists that have helped shape everything from the state’s culture to its economic landscape. Supporters of the legislation hope it’s the first step to fueling systemic support for local musicians at the state level.
The proposal will be introduced to lawmakers in the 2027 legislative session by its primary sponsor, Senator Janice Rich. The Grand Junction Republican didn’t come up with the idea herself. It was born through conversations fueled by the passion of Colorado musician and radio host Chris Kresge, who is now one of the resolution’s advocates.
A constituent of Rich’s, Kresge has spent the last 20 years showcasing decades of the state’s most talented artists across a dozen radio channels through his show Chris K’s Colorado Playlist, a program he created that is a veritable love letter to his community. Kresge is also the concert director of the Daconoco Music and Spirits Festival, which is where conversations about Colorado Musician Day first began in August.
Kresge was introduced to Mary Korthuis, a communications and outreach advisor for the Colorado Senate Republican Caucus, at the 18th annual festival. The two kept in touch, exchanging emails and phone calls about Kresge’s favorite subject: music.
