Photo: The Hollies | By Bethany Gemnell, Men’s Journal | The Hollies, one of the longest-running bands in mainstream British rock, have announced their disbandment, following the declining health of guitarist and backing vocalist Tony Hicks.
The British Invasion group, which first formed in 1962, scored six top 10 hits on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100:
- “Bus Stop” (1966, peak #5)
- “Carrie Ann” (1967, #9)
- “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” (1970, #7)
- “Long Cool Woman (in a Black Dress)” (1972, #2)
- “The Air That I Breathe” (1974, #6)
In an announcement on the band’s social media page, the statement announcing their split read: “Due to health reasons, Tony has decided to step away from touring.”
“Out of respect for Tony and everything they have shared throughout their remarkable journey together, Bobby [Elliott, drummer] has also decided to retire from touring.” Hicks and Elliott are the longest-serving members of the band, with both joining in 1963. As of August 21, Hicks is 80 years old, and Elliott is 84.
“After more than six decades, The Hollies’ touring career will come to a close with immense gratitude to the fans who have supported them around the world.”

Hollies Call It Quits as Last Two Members of Classic ’60s Lineup Retire

The Hollies have officially called it a day. And perhaps, like many, you didn’t even realize a version of that classic rock band was still performing. Yet the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted group had endured in some form and continued to tour since 1962 – including two members who go back virtually to the inception of the band, lead guitarist Tony Hicks and drummer Bobby Elliott.
Now, due to health concerns, Hicks has had to step away from the group. And in sympathy, Elliott has also decided it is time to retire. And with that, the group’s six-and-a-half-decade tenure is finally coming to a close.
