Movie Night With Barb was a lot of fun! We saw “Summer of Soul” at the Esquire Theater on 6th & Downing. Loved the movie! The really GREAT music made ME want to get up and dance. The movie was filmed over 6 weekends of concerts in Harlem, NY back in 1969 – same year as Woodstock and the Moon Landing. We all know about Woodstock and the Moon but this movie delves into the history of the Black bands and organizations that we so loved. So cool getting to see “Babies” Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Fifth Dimension, and so many gospel groups (one led by the Reverend Jesse Jackson) who really knew how to get you on your feet. Pure nostalgia, though, seeing Mahalia Jackson and Aretha Franklin. Would love to go back in a time machine to bring David Ruffin (of The Temptations) to the present and have him do a sing-off with Mariah Carey. I’d bet on David being the winner! What a loss of a great talent…
