Photo: Lithophones Lecture – May 27th | As most of our membership and readers know, we repost many articles that have something to do with the “business” of music to educate our members about the rules and regulations regarding music to make sure that artists are not getting cheated. Recently, a COMBO member wanted to know why we keep posting negative articles about ex-President Trump. The articles all deal with Mr. Trump’s disregard for copyright and trademark laws. Artists and songwriters who have registered their songs for copyright and, in some cases, trade-registered their name(s) and image, have the right to object to ANYONE using their songs or image, especially in the case of politics. The artists do not want to be “seen” as endorsing the candidate in any way so they say the candidate does not have permission to use their music or, as in the last case, a “tribute” band who dressed like the performers, giving people the idea that the original band, endorsed the candidate who also used the OP’s [original poster’s] song. Let’s hope our member understands now the point of these articles. Pretty sure if that member’s song(s) were ever used to support a candidate that the artist did not like, he would be pretty upset, too!
