Clark Hagan, COMBO Board Member and Grammy- Award Winning sound engineer, shared his insights into how important a really good recording of your song is to your career at our program meeting last Monday. Two of the points that he made in his talk were to go ahead and DIY with a home recording of your song but to really tweak that recording and arrangement to make sure it is something the public would want to buy and listen to. Then go into a studio with professional equipment and use pro musicians to record the song in a format that will make it ready for use in movies, television shows, radio, and commercials. The second point he made was in your promotion – if you record, say, 10 songs, on your “album”, only promote one song a month or every 6 weeks to that you are promoting your album for a full year. At the end of that time, then start promoting the album. By doing this, you will build interest and a listenership as each song should command a potential buyer to do so!

Out of 2,274,246 responses to a recent poll asking “How closely would you say that you follow trends and current events in music?”, 7% of respondents said “Very closely”, 26% said “Somewhat closely,” and a horrible 67% said “Not at all closely”. For something that affects everyone somehow in their everyday lives, you would think that they would pay more attention to what they hear, even in the background of television commercials!

The SouthWest Regional Folk Alliance conference was held at Swallow Hill Music last Sunday with speakers on many subjects. Organized by Martin Gilmore with assistance from Shauna Sweeney and manned by volunteers from Swallow Hill, the conference was very well run and we heard a lot of good comments from attendees (COMBO had an info booth there and people thought we put it together so they kept telling us how good it was!) A special shout-out to volunteer Debi who made sure the food line for breakfast and lunch ran as smoothly as a well-oiled machine! Be sure to get on their mailing list for next year’s event! https://www.swallowhillmusic.org
P.S. It was good to run into some COMBO members/old friends there as well. Lots of good conversations!
