Photo: Derek Phillips | By Alex Byington, ON3 | A University of Iowa band member has reportedly been taken off life support after collapsing from the heat during Saturday’s season-opener against Northern Illinois, according to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. The student, identified as Derek Phillips, reportedly suffered a “sudden cardiac arrest” shortly before the University of Iowa band was scheduled to perform its halftime show, according to a message posted to Phillips’ Instagram account by his family Sunday. The Instagram post revealed Phillips, a third-year student from Dubuque, Iowa, was taken to intensive care at the nearby University of Iowa hospital, but “the damage to his brain was too severe, and we have made the heartbreaking decision to remove life support.”
“Derek is comfortable, surrounded by family, and enveloped in the music he loved so much,” the Phillips family’s IG post read. “Thank you for every prayer, every shared experience, and every bit of love you’ve given to our boy.”
Temperatures were elevated all across the country during college football’s first full weekend of games, including topping more than 100 degrees at many schools across the Southeast. Iowa City reportedly saw temperatures reach 94 degrees on Saturday, according to ESPN, forcing Iowa to adjust start times for multiple athletic events throughout the weekend. Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes’ season-opener, which it won 40-0, kicked off as scheduled at 4:15 pm ET Saturday inside Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.
