COLORADO BLUES SOCIETY’S ‘BLUES IN THE SCHOOL’ – ARTIST IN RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN FORT COLLINS
The Colorado Blues Society is bringing its Blues in the Schools (BITS) once again to the Poudre School District. The CBS Blues in the Schools (BITS) program, as the name suggests, takes the Blues into local schools relating the music to the school’s curriculum in ways that make a difference in how students learn. CBS tailors the presentations to the needs of the school in topics such as social studies, history, language arts, geography, math, and of course, music. The objective of these presentations is to educate the students about the native art form of blues-related music by providing informative and interactive performances. CBS is in its 20th year now and has introduced the Blues to over 100,000 Colorado kids.
This year the Colorado Blues Society received a grant for the Bohemian Foundation to bring in award-winning performer and educator, Michael “Hawkeye Herman. 2015 marks Michael “Hawkeye” Herman’s 37th year of “Blues in the Schools” programs. Hawkeye is one of the originators of Blues in the School programs. He began this effort long before most blues support organizations and festivals even existed. Hawkeye is a past recipient of the Keeping The Blues Alive Award in Education. During the week of Oct 19 to Oct 23, Hawkeye will be presenting his unique program to over 1000 students in the Poudre School District presenting programs at Irish Elementary, Stove Prairie Elementary, Poudre High School, Red Feather Elementary, Livermore Elementary. Harris Elementary. Eyestone Elementary, Rocky Mountain HS, Bauder Elementary, and Bacon Elementary School.
