COMBO – The Colorado Music Business Organization

Interesting Bits|

So much chatter about the backlash against generative AI music. as a self-described “creative” I hate it, too. But surprisingly little push back on the explosion of tribute bands. Get The Led Out, Killer Queen, and Brit Floyd all at Red Rocks this summer. Also the headlining slots at local Cherry Days and Mountain Harvest festivals out here in Paonia, as well as local festivals and nightclubs across the country.

I do think there is a place for creative reinterpretation of iconic compositions from the vaults, especially when they are under exposed. But investing the energy in putting on shows that are about trying to tap into the vibe of something that happened 20-60 years ago feels like humans trying to do what computers could do better.

I don’t necessarily blame the promoters, nostalgia is one of the easiest positive human emotions to appeal to. It’s a safe bet economically. But this ultimately [is] a wasted opportunity for society that should be looking to artists to help develop the new paradigms for interfacing to our changing world.

I must admit that I am in several music projects and all but a couple have covers in the books. But I am really glad that my relationship with music is not such that I am doing diluted recreations of a Flatt and Scruggs or Memphis Jug Band or Butthole Surfers show that already happened.

So here is to encouraging all folks to take chances on the art that you make and support!
