Photo: Bishop Castle interior | UPDATE: The Castle is safe but a couple of out buildings burned down. | Story by Alliyah Sims, KDVR-TV Denver | The Aspen Acres Fire continues to spread across Southern Colorado, forcing evacuations and threatening the area surrounding Bishop Castle. The fire has scorched an area about the size of 38,000 football fields, which is half the size of Denver County.
Smoke continues to hang over the mountains as crews rely on aerial water drops to slow the fire’s spread.
“I’m the son of the castle builder and the current caretaker,” Daniel Bishop said.
Bishop Castle is a hand-built stone landmark in the mountains of Fremont County, located in Rye. It was constructed over six decades by the Bishops, and it’s known for its towering ironwork, winding staircases and roadside status as a visitor attraction.
The family also owns a gift shop that helps support the property financially by selling souvenirs, keepsakes and visitor items, serving as one of the family’s main sources of income.
Daniel says he has also been recovering from a recent 30-foot fall while the wildfire threat moved closer to the property.

Support Daniel Bishop & Bishop Castle
Many of you know and love Bishop Castle, a unique landmark built by the Bishop family and cherished by the community. Today, the Bishop family is facing an incredibly difficult time and needs your support. Daniel Bishop, Jim Bishop’s son and the longtime caretaker of Bishop Castle, was recently seriously injured and is currently recovering in a physical rehabilitation facility. While Daniel focuses on healing, a wildfire is also threatening the castle, forcing Daniel’s family to evacuate their home and close the gift shop, which is their main source of income.
Daniel and his wife are self-employed and depend on Bishop Castle for their livelihood. With Daniel unable to care for the castle and the gift shop closed, they have lost a significant source of income at a time when they need it most. Donations will go towards medical bills, living expenses while the family is evacuated, and repairs to Bishop Castle once they are able to return. Your support will help Daniel focus on his recovery, assist his family during this challenging period, and ensure that Bishop Castle remains a special place for everyone.
If you are able, please consider making a donation to help support Daniel’s recovery, assist his family during this difficult period, and help sustain Bishop Castle. Sharing this fundraiser is also a meaningful way to help. Please keep Daniel, the Bishop family, Bishop Castle, and the firefighters working to protect it in your thoughts. Every act of kindness makes a difference.
