By Jenni Fink, Newsweek | The Sinners musical performance during the 2026 Academy Awards received significant praise, but the audience watching at home didn’t see everything that the audience in the theater saw. The Oscars cut to commercial before the cast finished the routine and the New York Times reported the cast kept singing and dancing for another estimated 30 seconds after the commercial started. Musical performances were cut from last year’s show because of the time crunch, which appeared to be a problem this year, as well.

Sinners, the most-nominated film of the night led the ceremony with a historic 16 nominations. The musical performance featured several artists connected to the film and was one of only two original song performances scheduled for the broadcast. However, as the number was still underway, the ABC telecast abruptly faded out and went to commercial, according to live updates from The New York Times’ Oscars coverage.

Inside the Dolby Theatre, the performance continued uninterrupted, highlighting a disconnect between the in-room experience and what television audiences were able to see. The Times noted that the commercial break affected only the broadcast feed, meaning attendees in the theater saw the performance through to its conclusion while viewers at home did not.

The performance was widely praised and Times reporter Reggie Ugwu wrote in the outlet’s live blog that the Sinners performance made a “strong case” for bringing performances back.
