Patrick Emerine on Facebook: As it has become such a big issue, I have decided to go against my general policy of never posting about things that are, or have become, “political”. However, I will state here that Bad Bunny’s half time show will be ON our TV this Sunday. Not because I am in support or not in support of some ideology politically that apparently booking this artist for the SB halftime has sparked, but because for me, the Super Bowl is NOT a political event.
Additional thoughts on this (hang tight… I’ve got a few):
Hip Hop and Rap were the format for last year’s Super Bowl halftime program. I do not regularly listen to either musical genre, and no – it would not have been my choice for the SB halftime show. But I didn’t turn it off or turn on some other programming in protest. Instead, I remained open to witness a huge production that takes place in real time and marvel at how in the world they pull that kind of show off with the limited time to get all of that production gear on/off the field. And also to watch some of the world’s most respective HipHop/Rap artists perform their art. In the end, I thought it was pretty cool. Did it turn me into a big fan of those genres? No. Did it keep me from watching the NFL? No.
Another perspective: When I first learned of this year’s artist, my first thought was “who is this, and why did they choose this artist?”
I then came to the logical conclusion: Money
The NFL’s choice of Bad Bunny was not to piss off those that wouldn’t have chosen him. It was a business decision… a marketing move to attract a World-Wide Latino audience. Let that sink in. It’s the very same marketing tack they have employed by hosting more and more NFL games each year in foreign countries. They are doing what all companies/corporations with the means do: they are seeking to increase their market share. A business decision.
Many have also voiced an opinion similar to this one: “Most NFL fans don’t know who this artist is… why don’t they have an artist(s) that I know and like?” Again, the answer: Money. The NFL knows that the folks that I just paraphrased about are not likely to stop watching the NFL this year, next year, or the year after that. They’ve already got those viewers.
Lastly: As a musician and lover of all kinds of music, I prefer to keep an open mind and open ears, and have always enjoyed hearing new and different forms of music. And, I’ve been a big fan of all forms of Latino styles of music. So musically, I am looking forward to hearing this artist. It also needs to be said that Bad Bunny is arguably the biggest Latino music star in the world right now.
It was a business decision. Watch or don’t watch, everyone’s welcome to their own take on this, and to their opinion. That’s mine.
Thanks! ~ Patrick
Christopher Rufo Eviscerates ‘conservative outrage cycle’ Over Bad Bunny Halftime Show, Mocks Those Claiming Kid Rock Won
By Sarah Rumpf, Medialite
Conservative activist Christopher Rufo torched the “conservative outrage cycle” over Super Bowl halftime shows as a self-defeating folly, specifically mocking those who were attempting to argue Kid Rock had won some sort of “stunning culture war victory” over Bad Bunny.
The official Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show headlined by the superstar Puerto Rican rapper and singer (real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) was reportedly the most-watched of all time, based on early viewership estimates. It featured guest appearances by Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, tributes to real Latino businesses from around the country, a plethora of cultural references, a parade of flags from every country in North and South America, and even an actual wedding.
Bad Bunny’s halftime show garnered a lot of praise for its creativity, messaging, and cultural representation, but there were, of course, critics, perhaps most notably President Donald Trump, who dissed it as “absolutely terrible” for being mainly in Spanish and for the “disgusting” dance moves.

[Frankly I thought the Bad Bunny show was a joyous celebration of the island life of Puerto Rico but with subtle hints to the problems they are facing – like the lack of electricity – hence the electric poles in the skit. I don’t speak much Spanish (took 4 years of French in HS) but a great deal of the population of the Americas is Spanish-speaking due to the Spanish Conquistadores of long ago. Anyone remember Francisco Vásquez de Coronado who was looking for the rumored “Seven Cities of Gold” on these continents? Those explorers made everyone they conquered learn to speak Spanish!]
