Lil Nas X’s father is speaking out in defense of his son after the Grammy-winning musician pleaded not guilty to four felony charges that came in the wake of his alleged assaults on three different police officers.

Robert Stafford told reporters, including NBC News and TMZ, that Lil Nas X (né Montero Hill) is “very remorseful for what happened” on Aug. 21, when he was arrested after cops responded to reports of him allegedly walking naked along Ventura Blvd. in Los Angeles.

“He’s going to get the help that he needs and just keep him in your prayers,” Stafford said on Monday, Aug. 25. “Give him the same grace and mercy that God gives everyone.”

The media personality has always maintained a bubbly and honest personality online, which was why his conduct before his arrest sounded familiar to observers who had prior knowledge of his mental health problems.

The Blast noted that in February, he shared a video online revealing that he had struggled for a few years now and was only beginning to get his spark back. He shared his resolve to find genuine happiness in moments that mattered and not in numbers or chart placements, instead focusing on his creativity.

A few months later, he posted a picture of himself on a hospital bed with a slightly paralyzed face, fueling reports that he is battling Bell’s palsy.

[Personal note: I had a friend who was on some prescribed medication for bi-polar disorder. It made her hallucinate. One night the neighbors called. She was standing naked in their backyard, under the “motion detector light”, singing “Lord, Buy Me a Mercedes Benz,” apparently on stage in her mind. She was placed in a mental facility for 3 months but, only at that time, did the doctors change her medications. So I am going to give Lil Nas X the benefit of the doubt.]
