By Olivia Craighead, The Cut | There are, generously, maybe 20 people who could do a great job singing the national anthem. Then there are the lucky ones whose renditions aren’t outright offensive to the ear. Then there’s everyone else. Unfortunately, country singer Ingrid Andress found out [recently] she’s part of the third group. She was tasked with performing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the 2024 Home Run Derby, and to say it went poorly is an understatement. Andress has since said she was drunk while performing and that she’s checking into rehab. The national anthem is a nearly impossible song to sing if you’re stone-cold sober, and Andress is not the first (or the last) person to flub the notes. But where does she fall when it comes to the worst national anthem performances of all time? Let’s find out.
5. Roseanne Barr
I think this iconic 1990 rendition is bad only if you’re a true-blue patriot. Barr clearly is not respecting the song, and at the end she even grabs her crotch and spits on the field. It also “sounds bad,” but you’ll quickly learn that I don’t really care about that. Personally, I like this one. What did they think was going to happen when they invited Barr to sing the national anthem? Whitney Houston?
