Congratulations to Johnny Johnston! His CD Colorado Blue has been selected as the Colorado Blues Society’s BSPCD entry in Memphis this year. The competition was the stiffest yet as we had 8 great CDs that all had terrific aspects to them. Here’s what the judges said about Colorado Blue: “Very well done recording! Really liked it”, “Very good, I really liked this. Liner notes and cover very good as well” “Cool. He deserves the accolades”. Congratulations Johnny and good luck to Colorado Blue in Memphis!

Johnny Johnston has been singing and playing the blues in bars, restaurants and juke joints across America for the past 25 years. In the 1980’s, he honed his blues slide guitar style as a solo performer in southern Georgia and northern Florida. In the 90’s, he moved to the west coast and played electric slide guitar in blues bands in San Francisco and along the north and central coast of California. These days, Johnny Johnston regularly performs solo blues and blues inspired originals. Fort Collins’ own Johnny Johnston brings his hot fingerpickin’, slide guitar and vocals to Colorado music venues. Colorado residents no longer have to drive to Mississippi or New Orleans to enjoy real down home blues – Johnny Johnston delivers!!
The other CDs are all worthy to be in your collection. Austin Young “Live at the Toad 2” is Austin at his best. Austin Young Band “Not So Simple” is an outstanding album that we learned unfortunately could not be used because it was on the Vizztone label. The Catfish Kray Band’s “Ripples” is well done, great vocals and instrumentals and loaded with blues. Verses the Inevitable “All Debts Paid” is rootsy and enjoyable to listen to. Rex Peoples and Xfactr “Fried Food and Hard Liquor” is soulful and well done. If you like great saxplaying, check out Sixty Minute Men’s “Away we Go”. “Double Barrel Blues” is the first offering of Barrel of Blues, you can read about them in this week’s Update as well.
