By Val Barone, Collider | Queen is one of the few bands that have too many hits to count. Almost every single album has at least one hit song that people instantly recognize, and the 1980 album The Game has two of Queen’s most recognizable songs: “Another One Bites the Dust” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” The latter, written by Freddie Mercury, might be the fastest No. 1 hit ever written. The singer managed to capture the spirit of the simple and fun 1950s rock ‘n roll and brought it to the 1980s. Mercury’s voice and approach to the song are different from most of his other compositions, and the reason for that is that his inspiration for the song was none other than The King himself.

This No. 1 Song Took Less Than 10 Minutes to Write
In 1979, Queen had left their native England to record their upcoming album, The Game, in Germany. It was in his hotel room in Munich that inspiration struck Freddie Mercury, and he wrote a classic Queen song in the bathroom. He was reportedly lounging in his bathtub with a guitar, an unusual instrument for him, and he came up with a simple yet catchy song that, to this day, never fails to put a smile on the face of anyone who listens to it.

“Crazy Little Thing Called Love” is a short and funny love song. Mercury’s voice sounds deeper and lower than his usual tone, though it still sounds incredible. This choice of performance was no accident. Mercury was purposely emulating his early rock ‘n roll heroes. More specifically, the great Elvis Presley.
