By Madz Dizon, Parade | “Give a Little Bit,” Supertramp’s 1977 soft rock hit, remains one of the band’s best-known songs 49 years after its release, thanks to its simple message about love, caring and helping others. The song was the opening track on Supertramp’s fifth album, Even in the Quietest Moments…, and was released as a single in 1977. It became an international hit, reaching No. 15 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and No. 29 on the UK Singles Chart.
The song also has a special place in Supertramp’s recording history. It was recorded at Caribou Ranch, a famous recording studio built inside a converted barn in the Rocky Mountains near Nederland, Colorado.
For a song that began as an idea written years before it was recorded, “Give a Little Bit” went on to have a long life. It has appeared in movies, commercials and charity campaigns, while other musicians have also recorded their own versions.
Roger Hodgson wrote “Give a Little Bit” when he was 19 or 20 years old, according to American Songwriter. However, the song did not immediately become a Supertramp recording.
Hodgson brought the song to the band about five to six years after first writing it. By then, Supertramp had developed into a strong lineup featuring Hodgson, Rick Davies, Dougie Thomson, Bob Siebenberg and John Helliwell.
The song is officially credited to Hodgson and Davies, although the composition came from Hodgson.

Caribou Ranch was built by producer James William Guercio in 1972. The studio was created from a converted barn on more than 4,000 acres of ranch property in the Rocky Mountains near Nederland, Colorado.
The location became an important recording place for major artists during the 1970s and 1980s.
